The Gate Valve, also known as a Sluice Valve, is a linear motion isolation valve designed to start or stop flow in a pipeline. Its closure member—the gate—travels perpendicularly to the flow path. Engineered for "full-open" unobstructed flow, it is intended strictly for on/off service and must never be used for throttling, as partial opening will cause severe erosion, vibration, and damage to the seating surfaces.
