PA 12 (Nylon 12, or Polylaurolactam) is a high-performance, specialty member of the nylon family. Compared to other common nylons (such as Nylon 6 and Nylon 66), it offers a unique balance of properties.
1. Extremely Low Water Absorption (Key Advantage)
This is the most prominent advantage of Nylon 12. Its water absorption rate (approximately 0.25%-0.3%) is significantly lower than that of Nylon 6 (approximately 1.6%) and Nylon 66 (approximately 1.2%).
Benefits:
Excellent Dimensional Stability: Minimal dimensional change after water absorption, making it ideal for manufacturing high-precision parts.
Stable Mechanical Properties: In humid environments, its mechanical properties such as strength and rigidity are retained at much higher rates compared to other nylons, without significant softening due to moisture absorption.
Good Electrical Insulation Retention: Maintains good insulation performance even under humid conditions.
2. Excellent Low-Temperature Toughness
Maintains outstanding impact resistance and toughness even at extremely low temperatures (such as -40°C or even -60°C), resisting brittleness and cracking.
This makes it highly suitable for components used in cold environments.
3. Good Chemical Resistance
Exhibits good resistance to oils and greases, hydrocarbon fuels, saltwater, metalworking fluids, and weak acids and alkalis.
Particularly in automotive fuel systems, it offers superior resistance to modern gasoline (especially ethanol-blended gasoline) and diesel compared to other nylons.
4. Low Density
The density of Nylon 12 (approximately 1.01-1.02 g/cm³) is among the lowest of all engineering plastics, even lower than Nylon 11, enabling lightweighting.
5. Good Wear Resistance and Self-Lubrication
Inherits the excellent tribological properties of the nylon family, featuring a low friction coefficient and good wear resistance.
