A gate valve is a type of valve with a gate that moves perpendicular to the flow of fluid. Gate valves can only be fully opened or fully closed—they can't be used for regulating or throttling. The valve seals through the contact between the gate and the seat, and the sealing surfaces are often surfaced with metal to improve wear resistance, like 1Cr13, STL6, or stainless steel. Gates can be either rigid or flexible, so gate valves are classified as either rigid gate valves or flexible gate valves depending on the type of gate.
